Instructions

1. Conduct a cultural self-assessment to identify your own cultural biases and assumptions. You can search the internet for free assessment tools, such as the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist.
2. Research strategies substitute teachers can use to help students feel welcome in the classroom.
3. Write a reflection on how you would handle a situation where cultural misunderstanding occurs in the classroom.
4. Research activities appropriate for English language learners and gifted and talented students, making sure they’re adaptable to any classroom setting and suitable for different grade levels and subject areas.

Portfolio Integration

Include the completed assignments under the “Creating an Inclusive Classroom” section. This will be part of your “Substitute Teacher Toolkit.”
