Building Your Professional Network

Connecting with other educators can provide support and opportunities:

  • Introduce yourself to other teachers and staff
  • Join online forums or social media groups for substitute teachers
  • Attend school or district events when possible
  • Consider joining professional organizations for educators
  • Stay in touch with administrators at schools where you enjoy working

A strong network can lead to more work and better resources. Building relationships with teachers and administrators opens doors should long-term positions become available. They are also excellent references for future jobs and opportunities, such as the district’s grow-your-own programs.

Pursuing Professional Development

There are many ways to develop your skills:

  • Attend workshops or seminars (in-person or online)
  • Take online courses related to education
  • Read books and articles about teaching strategies
  • Watch educational videos or podcasts
  • Consider pursuing additional teaching certifications

Take time to do these on your schedule, which is perfect for substitute teachers!
