Every classroom is like a colorful patchwork quilt. Each student brings their unique background, experiences, and ways of learning. As a substitute teacher, it’s vital to appreciate and celebrate this diversity.

What Do We Mean by Diversity?

• Different family structures
• Diverse religious beliefs

Making All Students Feel Welcome

When students feel welcome and have a sense of belonging, they are more likely to participate and learn.

Ways to Create a Welcoming Classroom

• Learn and use students’ names, especially if substituting for more than one day (ask for help with pronunciation if needed).
• Smile and greet each student as they enter the room.
• Use inclusive language (like “friends” or “everyone” instead of “boys and girls”).
• Be patient with students who might be shy or nervous.
• Be accepting of responses, and redirect positively if the response is inaccurate.
• Encourage students to share their ideas and experiences.

Try this: Have students share one interesting fact about themselves at the start of the day or class. This helps everyone feel included and valued.
