As a substitute teacher, keeping students engaged can be tricky. But with the right strategies, you can make any lesson exciting!

Building Positive Relationships

Students are more likely to engage when they feel connected to their teacher. Here is how you can build positive relationships, even as a substitute:

• Learn and use students’ names
• Show interest in their lives (ask about hobbies, favorite subjects, etc.)
• Share appropriate things about yourself
• Use a warm, friendly tone of voice
• Be fair and consistent with all students
