Accommodations and Modifications

• Accommodations: Change how a student learns the material.
• Modifications: Change what a student is taught or expected to learn.

Examples of Accommodations

• Extra time on tests
• Preferential seating (like sitting near the teacher)
• Using a computer for writing assignments
• Having test questions read aloud

Examples of Modifications

• Simplified assignments
• Different grading standards
• Learning only crucial concepts instead of all details
• Using lower-level reading materials

Students not eligible for special education services may qualify for accommodations through a 504 Plan, ensuring equitable access to learning in a regular classroom setting.

You must provide the accommodations and modifications listed in the lesson plans, IEP, or 504 plan notes.

Collaborating with Special Education Staff

Many schools have special education teachers or aides who support students with special needs. They can be an excellent resource for you.

How to Work with Special Education Staff

• Introduce yourself at the start of the day.
• Ask about any specific strategies that work well for certain students.
• Follow the lead of the special education staff when they’re working with students.
• Ask for help if you are unsure how to support a student.
