Lesson 4 of 11

4. Our Inner Critic

Live
A thoughtful man walks as a small green goblin whispers behind him, with bubbles reading 'You're not ready.', 'This will go wrong.' and 'Why bother?'.
Sometimes the biggest obstacle isnโ€™t out thereโ€”itโ€™s the voice inside us telling us not to try.

Youโ€™ve learned how scripts and stories guide your responsesโ€”often below the surface of awareness. But sometimes, the voice guiding you isnโ€™t neutral. Itโ€™s critical, harsh, and discouraging. It questions your every move and erodes your confidence before you even begin.

That voice is what many call the inner critic. In this lesson, youโ€™ll learn to recognize it by another name: Part X.

Why It Matters

Part X may sound like ordinary negative thinking, but it runs deeper. Itโ€™s a patterned response from your limbic brainโ€”an inner warning system urging you to stay quiet, stay small, and avoid anything uncertain. Itโ€™s not protecting you from harmโ€”itโ€™s protecting you from growth.

Whether you know it as Part X, the Saboteur, or just โ€œthat voice in your head,โ€ its influence is real. It can block growth, delay action, and chip away at your motivation. And the worst part? It often sounds like the truth.

But itโ€™s not. Itโ€™s just another story. And when you see it clearly, you gain the power to respond differently.

? Introduction & Learning Goals

In this lesson, you will:

  • Explore how the inner critic (Part X or Saboteur) operates in your brain
  • Learn to recognize its voice and understand its real purpose
  • See real-life examples of how people call out their Part Xโ€”and regain their power
  • Practice noticing Part X in everyday dilemmas and learning to respond with clarity
  • Prepare to move forward with tools that reduce self-judgment and increase agency

This lesson helps you lay the foundation for handling internal judgment with more clarity, courage, and choice.
