Lesson 8 of 11

8. We Can Change the Story

Live
A smiling man uses a needle to pop a balloon filled with doubting thought clouds such as 'You'll look stupid.' and 'Nobody wants to hear your opinion.'.
He doesn’t force it—he just chooses the moment to let the old story go.

Our minds are wired to protect us. When something uncomfortable happens, we often fall into familiar narratives—stories we’ve told ourselves a hundred times.
“I’m not good at this.”
“They don’t respect me.”
“I always mess things up.”

These stories aren’t reality. They’re not even facts. They’re mental shortcuts—quick and convenient ways our brain makes sense of the moment. But just because they feel automatic doesn’t mean we have to follow them.

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to recognize these stories for what they are—and how to change them when they’re not serving you. This is where real MindShifting begins: not by forcing change, but by interrupting the pattern and choosing a new path.

Why It Matters

We can’t always control what happens around us. But we can influence how we interpret those events—and how we respond. The power lies in the pause: the moment when we recognize the story we’re telling ourselves, and ask, “Is there another way to see this?” Changing the story doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine. It means reclaiming our ability to choose what comes next.

? Introduction & Learning Goals

In this lesson, you’ll learn:

  • What the brain’s default reaction pattern looks like
  • How metacognition helps you interrupt and reframe that pattern
  • How even small shifts in internal dialogue can lead to different outcomes
  • Why you don’t have to believe every thought you think

You’ll also practice identifying one of your own recurring stories—and rewriting it in a way that supports growth instead of avoidance.
