Lesson 7 of 8

7. The Power of the Next Step

Live
An older man kneels folding a single stack of clothes in the middle of a very messy, cluttered room.
This room is a mess! One small step—like folding a single pile of clothes amid chaos—can spark the momentum for meaningful change.

Sometimes a challenge feels too big to begin. You might know where you want to go, but not how to start. Or you might feel stuck—not because the task is impossible, but because it feels overwhelming.

This lesson introduces a surprisingly simple but powerful idea:
You don’t have to solve the whole problem.
You just have to take the next step.

Why It Matters

Overthinking, self-doubt, and emotional resistance often arise when we focus too far ahead. The mind fills in the blanks with worst-case scenarios or makes the task feel heavier than it is.

Take Jordan, for example. He had to prepare a portfolio to apply for a new job—something he truly wanted. But every time he thought about it, his mind jumped ahead: “What if I don’t get it?” “What if this isn’t good enough?” “I’ll have to update my resume, write a cover letter, find references, organize my work—it’s too much.”

The task felt monumental. So he avoided it. For days.

Then someone asked him, “What’s just the next thing?”
He paused and thought: “Maybe I could create a document and list out the projects I’ve done.”
That felt doable. He opened a new file, gave it a title, and typed in the first project—with a short description of what he had contributed.

The next day, he returned and added a second. Then a third.
He didn’t have a polished portfolio yet, but he was building momentum.

The big task hadn’t gone away, but it no longer felt paralyzing.

By shifting your focus to a single, manageable next action, you reduce anxiety, increase focus, and create forward motion. The brain responds positively to clarity and momentum. Every next step, no matter how small, builds confidence and lowers resistance.

? Introduction & Learning Goals

In this lesson, you will:

  • Understand how “The Next Step” method reduces overwhelm and increases action
  • Learn to apply this method to both simple and complex challenges
  • Explore real-life examples of how others used this mindset to move forward
  • Practice organizing multi-step problems into a manageable path
  • Experience a guided interaction to help you apply this mindset to your own situation

By the end of this lesson, you’ll be better equipped to face uncertainty—not by solving everything at once, but by focusing on what you can do next.
