Lesson 3 of 9

3. Empathy – Connecting with Others and Self

Live

Empathy is the ability to genuinely tune in to what someone else is experiencing, without judgment, without trying to fix, and without turning away. In the MindShifting approach, empathy is a core Sage power: it shifts us from reacting to relating.

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to apply empathy both to others and to yourself, whether in moments of challenge or when things are going well. This includes meeting people with understanding, and offering yourself the same care and compassion.

Why It Matters

When we’re in survival mode, empathy often disappears. We focus on protecting ourselves, defending, blaming, or retreating. This cuts us off from others, and sometimes even from ourselves.

Empathy offers another way forward. It allows us to stay connected, even in hard moments. It quiets the noise of judgment and helps us see clearly, not just what someone else is feeling, but what we’re feeling too.

It also helps us build trust, repair relationships, and strengthen resilience. And when we turn empathy toward ourselves, it becomes one of the most powerful tools for personal growth. We are often our own harshest critics. Without self-empathy, mistakes can feel like proof of inadequacy. With it, we see them as a natural part of being human.

? Introduction & Learning Goals

  • Explore how empathy functions in both ease and challenge
  • Notice how the brain’s default patterns (like blame or criticism) interfere with connection
  • Learn how to consciously shift from judgment to empathy, even under stress
  • Practice turning empathy inward, transforming self-criticism into self-respect
  • Begin to build the mindset and habits that make empathy a real part of everyday life
